OCEANSIDE – An explosion sparked by a man who tried to kill himself using a pipe bomb touched off a fire inside a home on Hillfield Court late Thursday night, Oceanside authorities said.

The incident was reported at 11:20 p.m. near Rivertree Drive, Oceanside police said.

The explosion sparked a fire in a two-story home. Neighbors helped the 49-year-old man to safety outside and other local residents were initially evacuated from surrounding homes. The man's name was not immediately available. He was treated for burns at the scene before being airlifted to a local hospital.

The man told authorities he had tried to kill himself with a homemade bomb inside the home.

Firefighters moved cautiously around the scene out of concern for more explosives before moving inside to put out the blaze, which caused an estimated $100,000 damage.
